Risking US Sanctions, Turkey Gets S-400 Missile Defense Technology from Russia

Turkey, on Friday, July 12, 2019, defied the US sanctions and started receiving the S-400 missile system from Russia. S-400 is a surface-to-air missile system, including advanced radar for detecting aircraft and other targets.

The United States, however, was not in favor of Turkey acquiring the defense system from Russia, due to several key reasons.

Because, now that the Russian technology is inside the area of Turkey, who’s also a NATO ally, America is afraid that the engineers from Russia who will be setting up the missile system in Turkey’s territory, will be able to learn more about American fighter jets which are also a part of the Turkish army.

As a result of this, the US president Donald Trump’s administration has now decided to stop the delivery of the F-35 stealth fighter jet, a highly advanced aircraft of the United States, to Turkey. The training of the pilots who were learning how to fly this aircraft has also been suspended now.

According to many experts of global politics, Russian president Vladimir Putin has planned the deal of S-400 for diving the NATO allies. And it seems to be working too, as the American officials at the moment are not firm on the future of Turkey remaining a NATO member in the future, after doing the S-400 deal with Russia.

The director of the German Marshall Fund in Brussels, Ian Lesser, gave his opinion on this current situation and said that the political consequences of this deal will be very serious, because of the delivery of the Russian air defense system to Turkey.

He also added that now, there will be a lot of bad feelings and anxiety among the NATO members, due to Turkey’s action. Thus, causing other members to have a negative sentiment for the country, because it has received the aid from Russia, for its defense system.
