India’s ‘Best-Loved Politician’ and Former Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj Passes Away

Sushma Swaraj, the former foreign affairs minister and an important leader of BJP, passed away late night, on Tuesday, August 6, 2019. She had suffered a cardiac arrest.

'India's best-loved politician', as she was called by the US daily, Wall Street Journal, aged 67, was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Tuesday, at around 10:15 pm and was immediately taken to the emergency ward. Soon after that, many ministers rushed towards the hospital, including BJP president Amit Shah, party leaders Smriti Irani, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, defense minister Rajnath Singh, Prakash Javdekar, and Meenakshi Lekhi among others.

Earlier in the day, Mrs. Swaraj had tweeted on her social media profile, congratulating PM Modi and the Centre for abrogating Article 370 and revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, while also making them a separate union territory, along with Ladakh.

Speaking of her health issues, then,  previously in 2016, she also had a kidney transplant. And this year too, she wasn’t seen in the best of her health several times, during public appearances.

The moment the news of her death reached PM Narendra Modi, he also paid his condolences on Twitter, while praising Sushma Ji for her great political career and being a strong, motivational personality.

Sushma Swaraj was also a former Supreme Court lawyer, and only the second woman, after Indira Gandhi, to hold the office of Ministry of External Affairs. At age of just 25, in 1977, she became the youngest cabinet minister of the Indian state of Haryana.

She had been elected seven times as the Member of Parliament and three times as the Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Sushma Ji had also served as the chief minister of Delhi from October 13th, 1998 to December 3rd, 2003.

Earlier this year, she had decided not to contest in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, due to health issues.

Meanwhile, her body has been taken to her residence, which will be kept there till 12 pm, on Wednesday, August 7. After that, it will be taken to the BJP headquarters, and thereafter to the Lodhi Road crematorium.
