The first-ever World Food Safety Day WHO in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018, is celebrated today on 7 June 2019 under the theme "Food Safety, everyone's business".
Why is food safety day celebrated?
Through the World Food Safety Day, WHO pursues its efforts to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally. Same of food is key to achieving several UN Sustainable Development Goals.
International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and to address global problems.
Why is food safety ''everyone's business''?
Everybody has a role to play from farm to table to ensure the food we consume is safe and will not cause damages to our health and to ensure the effectiveness of the day as well by making food safety an important part of educational curricula. Raising awareness through slogans and social media would be an easy way to make fast progress and tackle this issue especially among teenagers.
