The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea. The prize is also meant to recognise all the stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions.

Twiter was flooded with congratulatory messages for the Ethiopian Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, teenage activist Greta Thunberg, who created a storm via her powerful speech at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, this September, missed out on winning the Nobel Peace Prize to the Ethiopian Prime Minister.

“I have no comment on that,” Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said to an environment news portal when asked about Thunberg and the possibility of future prizes linked to climate change, in line with a policy of only talking about the winners.

There had been a strong speculation that Thunberg would win for her work to alert the world to the mounting risks from worsening heatwaves, floods, storms and rising sea levels.

Twitter was filled with mixed reactions on this also.
