Apple Credit Card Under Scanner For Being ‘Sexist’

Although it was introduced as a means of availing fantastic offers without having to think about the credit limit, seems like Apple Card has turned out to be a questionable technological product indeed. The recent reports by news agencies have called it a ‘sexist’ for discriminating against women when it comes to having more credit limits.

The entire controversy started last week, on Thursday, November 7, 2019, when David Heinemeier Hansson, a tech entrepreneur posted a series of tweets, targeting the card, for being biased against his wife regarding creditworthiness. He claimed to receive 20 times the credit limits than what his wife was allowed to get. And it was despite the fact that his wife had a better credit score than him.

As his tweets gained eyeballs across the internet, many other people also came up with the same issue. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak also raised voice against the card and told that his wife was facing a similar problem.

After such observations, Linda Lacewell, the superintendent of the New York Department of Financial Services, said that her department will probe into this issue.

Adding further, she said that any algorithm that results in discriminatory treatment of women or any other protected class of people, intentionally or not, violates the New York law.

Goldman Sachs, the company with whom Apple made the card in collaboration, along with MasterCard, has eventually come forward to clarify things and issues that the people are facing currently. Its spokesperson, Andrew Williams, on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, claimed that they haven’t and won’t make decisions based on factors like gender, in all cases.
Additionally, an official statement was also released by the banking firm, giving its response towards the ongoing controversy.
The statement read:
We hear you. Your concerns are important to us and we take them seriously.
We have not and will not make decisions based on factors like gender. In fact, we do not know your gender or marital status during the Apple Card application process.
We are committed to ensuring our credit decision process is fair. Together with a third party, we reviewed our credit decisioning process to guard against unintended biases and outcomes.
Some of our customers have told us they received lower credit lines than they expected. In many cases, this is because their existing credit cards are supplemental cards under their spouse’s primary account—which may result in the applicant having limited personal credit history. Apple Card’s credit decision process is not aware of your marital status at the time of the application.
If you believe that your credit line does not adequately reflect your credit history because you may be in a similar situation, we want to hear from you. Based on additional information that we may request, we will re-evaluate your credit line.
