"I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share," wrote the CEO of Amazon in his announcement on Monday, showing his concern on climate change and environmental crisis. Bezos will be giving out $10 billion as a donation.
However, this change in his take on the climate crisis has come as a total contrast from what he used to believe until the last year. Previously, he has been the only US citizen, among the 5 richest people in the world, who didn’t sign the ‘Giving Pledge’ for giving away more than half of his fortune in his life or in his will, as reported by Business Insider.
The amount of $10 billion, which he will be giving as a donation, is around 7.7% of his total net worth of $130 billion. As per CNN, Bezos’ fund is the third-largest charitable pledge by any individual donor.
Prior to this latest announcement, there has also been a constant initiative from Amazon’s own employees also who want to push the company in a way that is more eco-friendly and suitable for the planet.
According to Amazon’s own figures and data, released last year in September, it admitted that there was an emission of around 44.4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, in 2018.
Last year, Jeff Bezos had also introduced a 'Climate Pledge' according to which he promised to meet the goals of the Paris agreement 10 years before and become carbon neutral by the year 2040. Interestingly, this promise was made just a day before the employees of Amazon were about to participate in a day of global climate strikes.
